This started as a tale at the track a few days ago about an amazing old school game, then a hunch that new models could turn it into something awesome and modern. Now it's happening. AGI all in! 😄

Try Omarchy for Windows v0.0.13 is out. github.com/omacom/try-oma… Copy an image in Windows, paste it in Omarchy. And back. Keyboard layout and time zone now follow Windows. The VM sizes itself to your CPU and RAM, remembers where you left the window, and shows up in Apps & features with a real uninstall. Deleted files give their space back to Windows. Plus a fix for gaps and borders in looknfeel.lua being ignored, and Print Screen finally stays inside Omarchy.

Why do we obsess so much over the install time of Omarchy? I'll tell you why...

Inter is having impact beyond my wildest dreams. When I started working on Inter ten years ago, I didn’t even expect it to survive the prototyping stage. Now it’s used by governments (including Switzerland, which is ironic in a way) and non-profit organizations around the world, bringing good typography to the people. It warms my heart to see so many young designers being able to express themselves in “Swiss style” without the need to break any laws. When I was a kid and an aspiring graphic designer, I could barely afford food and definitely did not have the money to buy font licenses. I wish Inter had existed back then.

I talked to a founder who was demoralized because all the ideas he could think of could be easily duplicated. I told him to ignore that worry; nearly all startup ideas are like that at first. Their value is the other ideas they lead to.

If you flip it, you can envision accuracy as a positive quantity. Oddly enough it's easier to read this way. The peak actually looks like a peak.

Added a requested feature by many: Connect apps to windows in workspaces. For the interested ones, here is a full list of the changes made, written by AI: - Pin an app to a workspace so it opens there wherever you launch it from, using a Hyprland window rule - Pin an app to a numbered place, or to several places at once - Put several apps in one place; whichever is open takes it - Search every app installed on the machine, not just what is running - Read names and launch commands from desktop entries - One button opens everything the workspace is missing, one window per empty place - Terminal apps like nvim and btop open in your terminal under a class the pin can match - A pin corrects itself when a launch opens a window under a different class, as webapps and terminal apps do - A pin remembers the command that opened it and the readable name of the app - Split a slot the other way, so a column becomes a top and a bottom - Split that half again, three levels deep: columns, then rows, then columns - Drag the divider at every level, including the one inside a split - Extra windows become real places instead of a temporary stack while you work in the panel - Editing a shipped layout makes a copy called custom-xxxx and leaves the original alone - Capture builds a layout plus pins from the windows already on screen - Drag one tile onto another and the two swap their apps - Hold a tile near an edge and that half lights up; drop it there and the place splits, your app takes the half, and the place it came from disappears - Hover a tile for two arrows that split it either way - Right-click a tile to split, merge, remove, even out, clear its apps, or put an app in it - Right-click a workspace to hand it back to Hyprland, capture it, or clear its apps - App names are drawn inside the tiles they live in - The tile you are carrying follows the cursor with its name and target - A layout per monitor, sitting between the per-workspace choice and the profile default - Clicking a workspace takes you to it - The panel scrolls when it grows taller than the screen - Single-key shortcuts are gone; Esc closes, everything else is pointed at - Sixteen command-line commands: status, workspace, json, profiles, apply, layouts, set, reset, pin, unpin, capture, launch, open, close, show, hide, toggle - Full command-line documentation in docs/cli.md

There's a startup in the current YC batch that's growing at 57% a week. And not because they started last week; they've been doing this for a couple months. They can't keep growing at this rate for too many more months; you run out of atoms; but they're likely to be big.

Beware people obsessed with outcomes instead of building outcome machines. Its worse than ever with AI, but these people existed before. Short term results above all else, etc. Don't fall into the trap. Invest in building strong fundamentals, invisible supports, and outcomes flow like water. An outcome machine.

Fuck ’indie’ In fact, fuck bootstrapped, venture backed, founders, solopreneurs, startups, YC, … and all communities or factions around software. All of them are exploding in numbers, and therefore any status or value they brought is diminishing. Especially if it can be self-assigned, e.g indie. Ultimately, it’s all about software that brings value and is built with care (quality). Your best attempt at your desired dent in the universe. Put your heart into it, and dare have your identity associated with it vs. a label. You’ll naturally find likeminded people. That should be your nisched community, but it will be organic and have no name. Anything >100 people is not a community. It’s a program designed by someone’s incentives, and with diminishing returns to you.

Most developers know that avg latency is misleading and they should use percentiles instead. They also know that if 90tile response time is 200ms, then 10% of the requests had response times higher than 200ms. Well, the last sentence is false. Or rather, true in theory. The only way to calculate true percentiles is by sorting and scanning all the data. Since this often means many millions of datapoints, we actually don't do that. We approximate. With histograms. How does that work? You create buckets of values: 0 to 0.05, 0.05 to 0.25, 0.25 to 1, 1 to 5, 5 to infinity. Then you accumulate: number of data points, sum of values and the number of data points that fall in each bucket. Now, if I ask you for the 90tile value, you start going over the buckets from lowest to highest latencies, and add the number of points in each bucket. Once you go past 90% of the data points, you know that your 90tile value is in this bucket. Then you give either the middle of the bucket or the upper bound as the estimate. Note that you don't know what % of the data is higher than the estimate. And also note that the quality of the estimate really depends on how the data ends up distributing between the buckets. It isn't uncommon for ntiles 90, 95 and 99 to all fall in the same bucket (if your distribution is "heavy tail"). And sometimes all or most of the data falls in one bucket and you can tell nothing. I recently had a case where we noticed the 99tile of response time for a specific request type was 10s. This was both high and suspicious - we have a 10s timeout in some places. But we couldn't find any request that hit these timeouts in our logs. Super weird! Until a smarter colleague realized (by looking at sample traces) that 10s was just the lower bound of the top bucket. The requests actually timed out at 60s. This allowed me to find the timeout they actually hit and fix the issue. So the lesson is: Averages are misleading. But percentiles are usually approximate and can be misleading too! Be careful not to trust the data blindly. #StatisticsSaturday

We’re doing it @polar_sh several times a day, combined with @sentry MCP, and using @stillaai agent on Slack. Game changer.

We’re switching TOTP on @polar_sh from SHA-256 to SHA-1. Not because it’s better, but because some major authenticator apps (hey @Authy, @Okta Verify) ignore the algorithm parameter and silently generate SHA-1 codes anyway 🤦‍♂️ The result: rejected codes and confused users.
